Embroidery designs are pretty small in terms of file size. A quick scan of the embroidery designs on my computer reveals that the average size is around 100 kilobytes, or 100 “KB”. To estimate how many designs will fit on a USB stick or camera card, all we have to do is divide the storage capacity by our average file size.
These days, it’s hard to find a USB stick or camera card that is less than 4 gigabytes, or 4 “GB”. A gigabyte is 1000 megabytes (MB), and there are 1000 kilobytes in a megabyte.
- 10 average size embroidery designs fit in 1000 KB
- 100 average size embroidery designs fit in 1 MB
- 100,000 average size embroidery designs fit in 1 GB
As you can see, with a 4 GB USB stick or camera card, you could probably put every embroidery design known to man on it. Here’s the problem; Embroidery machines don’t like to read storage devices that are that big. Chances are, you would get an error or crash the machine if you tried.

In regards to your comment: "with a 4 GB USB stick or camera card, you could probably put every embroidery design known to man on it."
I wish this was true, I have over 25 Gigs of embroidery designs, and I have friends who have double and triple this amount. Are you an embroiderer? It seems to me that someone who embroiders would know the comment would not be true.
Just wondering?

Hi Ila, thanks for your input. I had looked at the average size of embroidery designs on my computer when I created this post. That's how I came up with my figures. Perhaps your designs are a different format? What format are your designs? Are you including documentation in your 25G?
Thanks for the information
